Here’s your college essay application, even if you’re long past applying to college.
Do you believe in the idea that “there are no accidents,” also known as “things happen for a reason?”
Why or why not?
Do you think such a belief requires faith in God?
Explain.
Take all the time you need to answer. But please post your thoughts.
Thank you.

No, there’s no such thing as destiny or fate. There’s chance. And there’s finding the positive and negative in any given situation. But really, we’re just an accident of the universe; mammals bumping together on a tiny planet as it hurtles through space.

I CHOOSE to believe that there are no accidents. I choose this because I can’t see the reason of getting out of bed (or working to preserve said bed under a roof) if there’s not some sort of universal plan for all of this. If life is purely random, and there’s no puzzle to solve, then I can’t bother. I believe that is viewpoint is (in me, at least) innate. I don’t know if my faith in God is the reason, or if I developed a faith in God because it dovetailed nicely with this viewpoint.

Ironically, I am the world’s least spiritual person, but I increasingly believe in things happening for a reason. Why? Because whenever things do not go according to the plan I have (carefully) mapped out in my mind there are surprises I never imagined. To throw out some cliches: Happiness comes out of sorrow; almost every situation gets better. So, yes, I suppose this is my version of god.
